To bring the idea of the importance of reading to communities throughout Pakistan, the Pakistan Reading Project is developing multimedia campaigns. Using television, radio and the print media, the project is producing family-oriented content with distance and self-learning programs that will reach all Pakistanis, including out-of school youth, older learners, and adults with low levels of literacy.
Television Shows
Leveraging the popular Alif Laila (1001 Nights) television program, the Pakistan Reading Project is developing 52 (in Urdu and English) 2-minute animated episodes, similar to the American Schoolhouse Rock, that promote reading and teach literacy concepts while incorporating elements of gender inclusion and good citizenship. To complement the television show, reading instructional activity books will be developed and distributed through commercial publishers and NGOs to girls' book clubs, mobile/community libraries and the general public.
National Educational Radio Series
The Pakistan Reading Project will produce and broadcast over 500 educational radio episodes that will highlight issues in education and the importance of reading. The radio series is aimed at engaging both parents and children. The program will be a mix of discussions with education experts, dramas for adults, and segments for children.
